More Union wounded

Eighteen wounded and captured Union soldiers were hospitalized in the Hampton Roads area following the battle of South Mills. Eighty-three more were carried back to either Roanoke Island or New Bern. Of those, twenty-five were transported to New York City aboard the steamer Eastern Queen, arriving on 9 May 1862. Their names are:

  • Lt. William A. Cahill, Co. A, 89th NY – slightly in the thigh
  • Coe R. Coleman, Co. A, 89th NY – in the hand
  • William Cockefier, Co. I, 9th NY  –  severely in shoulder
  • Thomas Burke, Co. A, 9th NY – severely in thigh
  • George B. Carteen, Co. H, 9th NY –  severely in thigh
  • Severin Kriss, Co. A, 9th NY – severely in chest
  • Jeremiah Voorhees, Co. A, 9th NY – severely in the leg
  • John Harrison, Co. B, 9th NY – severely in forearm
  • Phillip Weekaser, Co. C, 9th NY – severely in knee
  • Joe Byrd, Co. F, 9th NY – severely in thigh
  • Louis Coleman, Co. F, 9th NY – severely in thigh
  • Henry Harterfels, Co. F, 9th NY – in leg, both thumbs amputated
  • Cpl. Frank Vallade, Co. F, 9th NY – severely in both thighs
  • Sgt. Thomas Hodges, Co. H, 9th NY – severely in shoulder
  • Cpl. William Matthews, Co. H, 9th NY – severely in thigh
  • Ed Drum, Co. G, 9th NY – severely in both hands
  • Charles E. Johnson, Co. I, 9th NY – in the forearm
  • Robert H. Irwin, Co. I, 51st PA – slightly in arm
  • Theodore Baird, Co. G, 51st PA – finger amputated
  • James Powers, Co. G, 51st PA – finger amputated
  • Cpl. Harrison Cheney, Co. G, 21st MA – left arm
  • Owen A Rex, Co. D, 51st PA – slightly in knee
  • James Powers, Co. G, 51st PA – slightly in arm
  • Cpl. H. C. McCormick, Co. H, 51st PA – slightly in leg
  • George D. Hedley, Co. G, 21st MA – left thigh

Charles Johnson reported most of the 9th NY were hospitalized at the corner of 51st Street and Lexington Avenue at Mrs. Valentine Mott’s institution. William Cockefier’s wound got worse and the arm had to be amputated while he was hospitalized in New York.
